# The Best Photo for an AI Rap Video (and 6 Photos to Avoid)

**Short answer:** use a sharp, well-lit, front-facing photo of **one** person, from chest up, with the face taking up at least a quarter of the frame and nothing covering the mouth. That gives the video model enough detail to keep the face consistent and sync the lips.

## Why does the photo matter so much?

The photo becomes the first frame of the video. The model invents every later frame from it, so anything unclear in the photo (a blurry face, a hidden mouth, two people) gets guessed, and guesses are where faces drift and lip-sync breaks.

## What does a good photo look like?

- **One person**, facing the camera or slightly turned.
- **Even light** on the face: daylight from a window is ideal.
- **Chest-up framing** with some room above the head. Vertical photos suit the default 9:16 format.
- **Mouth visible** and relaxed, closed or slightly open.
- **Sharp focus** on the eyes. Phone portrait mode is fine.

## Which photos should you avoid?

1. **Group photos.** The model may animate the wrong person or blend faces.
2. **Sunglasses, masks or hands over the face.**
3. **Tiny faces** in wide landscape shots.
4. **Heavy beauty filters or cartoon effects.** They confuse the face model.
5. **Strong side light or backlight** that leaves half the face dark.
6. **Very low resolution** images, such as old screenshots.

## Do illustrations, pets or mascots work?

Often, yes. Clear, front-facing cartoon characters and mascots with a visible mouth can work well. Pets are hit-and-miss because animal mouths don't map cleanly to rap lip movements. Try a 150-credit **Draft** first.

## Can I use someone else's photo?

Only with their permission. Don't upload photos of celebrities or anyone who hasn't agreed. See [AI rap videos: rights, consent and commercial use](https://getairapvideo.dev/guides/ai-rap-video-rights-and-safety).

## Quick checklist

- [ ] One person, face in focus
- [ ] Mouth visible, nothing covering the face
- [ ] Soft, even lighting
- [ ] Chest-up, vertical if possible
